Round Two…FIGHT!

May 9, 2008 on 2:49 pm | In Art Stuff, Cartoonists

Over at his Livejournal, Corey “The Rey” Lewis offers up a small preview of Double Z, the upcoming sequel to his off-the-wall fight comic Sharknife from Oni.

Lewis is working double time to get Double Z out in time for San Diego, which is awesome because we would LOVE to read some new Sharknife at San Diego.

Seriously. That book is more fun than beating Street Fighter II on hard while slurping down some Captain Crunch and 2% on a Sunday morning—which I did every Sunday morning from 1995-1998.

Zuda times twoda!

May 7, 2008 on 8:07 pm | In Art Stuff, Web Comics

OK, that may be the stupidest title I’ve ever written for any post, but what do you really want from me?

ANYWAY, after yesterday’s call out to the new Zuda competiton, Brendan McGinley was nice enough to send a character sketch from his Zuda competing strip Hannibal Goes To Rome so I thought I’d share.

Hannibal

And there you have it.

See & Read: Comic Book Comics!

Comic Book Comics #2

I know that the phrases “Indie Jones” and “Exclusive Content” go together about as well as “Balanced Diet” and “Processed Cheese,” but the very cool Fred Van Lente was kind enough to let us debut the cover to the second issue of he and artist Ryan Dunlevy’s Comic Book Comics. If you haven’t heard of the book yet, it’s a humorous telling of the history of the comics medium done in the same style as Van Lente and Dunlevy’s Action Philosophers!, and you can read all about it in my interview with Van Lente at the Big WU. My favorite part is this, where he talks about why the comic is both funny and informative:

VAN LENTE: Some of it—and I’m being totally up front about this—is to not get sued. One of the ways to refer to this stuff, because we’re using trademarked characters—one of the things people said when I told them this idea years ago was, “How are you gonna be able to do that and not be sued? Because you’re talking about Superman, you’re talking about Blue Beetle, you’re talking about all these trademarked characters, aren’t people going to come after you?” And the way you protect yourself from that is—there’s an educational component to this that’s covered under copyright law as fair use, but there’s ways to make fun of them. It’s parody, and it’s protected. Sometimes it becomes, I gotta tell some jokes here, or I’m gonna get sued! You’ll see when you get the comic, the entire inside front cover is taken up by legalese. Humorous legalese, of course, but all accurate nonetheless.

There’s plenty more cool stuff in the link, and you can read plenty of free pages from Comic Book Comics #1 at the Evil Twin website, so check it out!

Check out Jeff Lemire’s THE HORSELESS RIDER

March 12, 2008 on 9:42 pm | In Art Stuff, Cartoonists

Jeff Lemire, award winning creator of the Essex County trilogy, posted a short, spooky western comic over at his blog. His style definitely works great with the genre. Hopefully he does more of this stuff some day!

Friday Links

March 7, 2008 on 8:09 pm | In Art Stuff

Sharknife/PENG creator, Corey Lewis has launched a new art blog. If you’re not familiar, Corey makes fun, video game inspired, hyper-stylized, manga-ish fight comics. Sharknife, from ONI, actually got a shoutout in 2008’s Wizard Edge (on stands now, in Wizard #198!). Add that blog to your feeds and get experienced!

Aaron Turner posted the final version of Tom Neeley’s Hydra Head Records SXSW showcase poster over at his blog. It looks awesome with Aaron’s colors and text, but it mostly makes me depressed that I’m not going to see Torche, Harvey Milk and Clouds. Definitely check out the rest of Aaron’s blog too. He usually posts artwork from whatever album art he’s working on and other cool stuff

NEELY AND HYDRAHEAD, TOGETHER AGAIN

March 4, 2008 on 11:42 pm | In Art Stuff

Tom Neely, the award winning creator behind 2007’s The Blot has teamed up yet again with bestlabelever, Hydra Head Records to produce some art for their 2008 SXSW showcase poster.

You might remember Tom previously announced he would be doing a full comic “adaptation” of the Melvins’ latest album, “(A) Senile Animal” to accompnay Hydra Head’s LP release.

Over at his blog Tom gives a glimpse of the art, which Hydra Head founder/ISIS frontman, Aaron Turner will be designing, coloring and text layout for. Tom also shares a sweet story of meeting Turner after listening to a lot of ISIS during the creation of The Blot.

Greetings!

Hello world!

Welcome to Indie Jones—the independent/alternative comics blog at Wizard Universe!

We’ve got a lot of great things planned for this blog, like interviews, reviews, news, what kind of tea I’m drinking (Raspberry Zinger) and so much more!

We’ll start off with some sweet Friday morning links to check out…

First, Super Spy creator Matt Kindt has posted some images from his next graphic novel over at his blog. The book is called Super Natural. He hasn’t said what its about yet, but he has said he’ll be using some historical figures like Harry Houdini, Amelia Earhart and Morgan Earp in it. Good enough for us!

In other news Brian Maruca and Jim Rugg are doing a brand new 10-page Street Angel story for Superior Showcase #3 from AdHouse! Over at his blog Rugg posts a page and says the book should be out at Heroes Con this summer. Hooray!

Rounding out our RSS feed, James Jean has posted a page from his upcoming story in the next Meathaus anthology. Brilliant as always.

Wrapping up, I encourage everyone to go check out my new favorite web comic, Patches, by Kelly Vivanco (she’s also got some beautiful paintings on her site). If you don’t find it very funny we probably wouldn’t get along as friends. Just sayin’.

Well that’s it for now! Be sure to check back for more (later today, *wink wink*)!
